Battery passports after repair, reuse and recycling

How repair, repurposing, remanufacturing and the waste stage can affect the passport and responsibility.

Ordinary repair

A simple repair generally does not require a new passport. Keep the relevant information current and distinguish repair from operations that change the battery’s purpose or status.

Repurposing and remanufacturing

Repurposing, remanufacturing or certain preparations for reuse can require a new passport linked to the earlier passport. The applicable operation and the roles of the operators determine the requirements.

The waste stage and recycling

Rules govern transfer of responsibility to the relevant producer, producer responsibility organisation or waste management operator when the battery becomes waste. The passport ceases to exist after recycling.

Keep the lifecycle traceable

Record the relevant changes, dates and responsible parties. Agree how links between successive passports and supporting information are maintained. Check Article 77 and the Commission’s guidance for the specific operation; “used battery” and “waste battery” are not interchangeable descriptions.
