The origin of the battery does not remove the obligation
An in-scope battery imported into the EU is subject to the passport requirement when the applicable conditions are met. Establish who is the responsible economic operator, whether you import complete batteries and how they are classified.
Request source information from the factory
- Manufacturer and model identification.
- Composition, performance and other applicable technical data.
- Supporting documents and their versions.
- Identifiers for individual batteries.
- A contact and process for missing information and future updates.
Separate data supply from responsibility
A manufacturer outside the EU can supply information or carry out authorised practical tasks. That does not automatically make it the responsible EU importer. Record the origin of information, resolve gaps and agree which party checks it.
Registration and customs
According to the Commission’s battery FAQ, the passport registration identifier does not need to be entered in the electronic customs declaration. That does not remove the passport registration obligation or other customs and product requirements.
