Three categories
From 18 February 2027, a passport is required for LMT batteries, electric vehicle batteries and industrial batteries with a capacity greater than 2 kWh that are placed on the EU market or put into service.
- LMT batteries: batteries for light means of transport, including many e-bikes.
- EV batteries: traction batteries for electric vehicles.
- Industrial batteries above 2 kWh: including many stationary energy storage systems and home batteries.
The capacity threshold applies to industrial batteries
The 2 kWh threshold does not apply to the LMT and EV categories. A small e-bike battery is therefore not exempt merely because its capacity is below 2 kWh. A product name such as “home battery” is not a complete legal classification.
Establish the category before collecting data
Consider the battery’s intended use, design and the definitions in Article 3. Record how the complete battery is classified. A cell or module and the finished battery are not necessarily treated in the same way. Other rules may apply even when the battery passport requirement does not.
